Responsible travel in Afar: people beyond the landscape

Afar is home, a workplace and a cultural landscape. Respectful visits begin with local guidance, consent and an understanding of the salt economy.

It is easy to arrive in Afar thinking only about volcanoes, mineral colours and enormous horizons. Those landscapes are also places where people live and work. A useful expedition introduces that relationship instead of treating the region as an empty backdrop for photographs.

Ask before photographing a person, their home or their work. A guide can help explain the request, but permission should still come from the people involved. A refusal is a complete answer. Putting the camera away can make space for a conversation that would never happen while someone is being watched through a lens.

At Lake Assale and around Hamed Ela, salt production and transport follow working routines. Observe from the distance your local guide recommends, avoid blocking activity and do not ask people to repeat a task for a better image. Whether work or caravans are visible depends on the day; they are not performances scheduled for visitors.

Respect private spaces and local guidance during any community encounter. Ask the team about appropriate opportunities to buy locally, and leave meeting plans flexible enough for people to decline or change their minds. Interest in a culture does not create a right to enter a home or photograph a family.

The same care applies to the landscape. Keep your waste with you, follow the agreed route and leave mineral formations as you find them. Travel with enough time to listen and enough flexibility to accept a change of plan. The aim is to understand Afar through the people who know it, while respecting their everyday lives.
