Questions travellers ask
Straight answers about how we work, what a Danakil expedition involves and how booking works.
About Afar Horizon
- Is Afar Horizon Expeditions a local company?
- Yes. Afar Horizon Expeditions is locally owned and operated in Ethiopia, with local leadership and local operational relationships.
- Who is Tesema Teven?
- Tesema Teven is our founder and lead guide. He was born and raised in the shadow of the Simien Mountains, and built Afar Horizon to take travellers from those mountains to the landscapes of Afar.
- Where are you based?
- Our office is in Addis Ababa, and our Danakil expeditions start from Semera, the gateway to the Afar lowlands.
- Can I speak directly with Tesema?
- Yes. Send a message through WhatsApp or the Plan My Journey form and ask for him.
Planning & booking
- Do you operate private tours?
- Yes. Private journeys are our core service. Every expedition on this site runs privately for your group.
- Can you organise a custom itinerary?
- Yes. You can start with a destination, an interest, a number of days, or simply an idea, and we build the route around it.
- What is included in the price?
- Each expedition page lists exactly what is and is not included. On Danakil expeditions that usually means a private 4×4, driver, guide, local scouts where required, fuel, water, camping equipment, the meals listed and local access arrangements.
- What is usually not included?
- International and domestic flights unless added, your Ethiopian visa, travel insurance, personal equipment, alcohol, tips and anything not listed.
- Are the website prices final?
- No. They are starting prices per person. Your quotation depends on group size, route, season, vehicles, accommodation, permits and flights, and we confirm it before you pay anything.
- What deposit is required?
- Our standard deposit is generally 30% of the booking value. Some specialist or time-sensitive bookings need a different deposit; the exact amount is stated in your quotation.
- Do you provide airport transfers and hotels?
- Yes. We arrange airport transfers, hotels and intercity transport as part of your journey.
- Can you arrange domestic flights?
- We plan them into your itinerary and help with coordination, subject to availability and airline payment arrangements. They are quoted at the current fare.
- How far in advance should I book?
- For private and specialist journeys, earlier is better, because vehicles, accommodation and specialist staff need to be coordinated. For the Danakil in the cooler season, a few months ahead is sensible.
- How do I request a quotation?
- Use the Plan My Journey form or message us on WhatsApp with your dates, number of travellers and what you want to experience.
The Danakil & conditions
- Do you operate the Danakil all year?
- Operating conditions vary with season, route, weather, security and local access. The cooler months are the preferred period. We confirm current conditions before booking.
- What happens if conditions change?
- We adjust the route, timing or activities to protect your safety and the core of the experience, and tell you as early as we can. If a route becomes inappropriate, we may change or cancel it: people before itineraries.
- Will I see lava at Erta Ale?
- No natural phenomenon can be guaranteed. An Erta Ale expedition is a journey to a volcanic region, not a guaranteed lava display.
- How physically demanding is Erta Ale?
- The approach is roughly 10 km on foot across uneven, exposed volcanic ground, timed for the cooler hours. It is not technical, but you need reasonable fitness.
- What should I pack for the Danakil?
- Light, breathable long-sleeved clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, sturdy walking shoes, a headlamp, a reusable bottle, a power bank and your personal medication. Our Before You Go page has the full list.
- Can I combine the Danakil with Gheralta, Axum or the Simien?
- Yes, when the route is operationally possible. Our 9- and 10-day expeditions combine the Danakil with Axum and Gheralta, and we can build other combinations on request.
Specialist travel & partners
- Can photographers customise trips?
- Yes. We design around light, longer field stops, night photography and extra time at the places that matter to you.
- Can you support film crews and researchers?
- Yes. We provide vehicles, drivers, guides, field logistics and local coordination. Filming and research permissions remain subject to the relevant authorities.
- Do you work with overseas travel companies?
- Yes. We provide ground operations for international tour operators and agencies, including white-label operations. See our Ground Operations page.
