Our signature Danakil expedition: the classic route with room to breathe.
The Journey
The landscape is huge, the roads are difficult, the heat is real and the camps are basic. Four days covers Erta Ale, Lake Asale and Dallol with an afternoon of rest built in, which also gives us flexibility around road conditions, weather and volcanic access.
The fourth day is not filler. It is breathing room, and it makes the whole expedition easier to adapt when conditions change.
Places
Day by Day
Exact timings, camp locations and access are confirmed for your dates.
Day 1
Briefing, vehicle preparation and a water check, then the descent. A stop around Lake Afdera, then the increasingly remote final section toward Erta Ale. Rest through the hottest hours and walk toward the volcanic area in the cooler evening.
Day 2
Early-morning volcanic observation if conditions permit, then breakfast and the return to the vehicles. Lava gives way to desert on a long expedition transfer to Hamed Ela. After a rest, visit the salt landscape around Lake Asale, depending on conditions.
Day 3
An early start, because Dallol is best approached before the heat. Your guide explains the mineral colours, salt formations and volcanic activity behind them. Continue into the wider salt country and, where active, observe salt workers and camel caravans respectfully. The afternoon is for rest.
Day 4
A final desert morning, then the return journey with a stop around Afdera where timing allows. The landscape changes again as the road climbs back to Semera.
Operating subject to current access and conditions
The Danakil is a remote expedition environment. While we follow the planned itinerary as closely as possible, route conditions, weather, access, security and local operational circumstances can occasionally require adjustments. Our experienced local team makes these decisions with safety and the quality of the experience in mind.
