The Danakil without the rush, with a night at Lake Afdera and a second day at Erta Ale.
The Journey
Five days adds a night at Lake Afdera and a full second day around Erta Ale, so the volcano is not squeezed into a single evening. Designed for travellers who want more than photographs.
The extra day at Erta Ale allows rest, geological interpretation and, if conditions permit, a second observation window.
Places
Day by Day
Exact timings, camp locations and access are confirmed for your dates.
Day 1
The highland-to-lowland transition, with your guide interpreting the Afar landscape. Time around Lake Afdera, according to conditions, and a first conversation about salt and water in the desert.
Day 2
Deeper into the depression through remote volcanic country. Rest on arrival near Erta Ale, then the evening volcanic experience.
Day 3
Early volcanic observation, breakfast, then rest, geological interpretation and time for photography. A second observation may be arranged if conditions permit.
Day 4
Leave the volcanic landscape and cross the desert to Hamed Ela. Rest, then the Lake Asale salt plain in the late afternoon where conditions permit.
Day 5
Early exploration of Dallol and the salt landscape, including traditional salt-working areas where active, then the long return journey to Semera.
Operating subject to current access and conditions
The Danakil is a remote expedition environment. While we follow the planned itinerary as closely as possible, route conditions, weather, access, security and local operational circumstances can occasionally require adjustments. Our experienced local team makes these decisions with safety and the quality of the experience in mind.
