Day 1
Semera → Lake Afdera → Erta Ale
Meet your expedition team in Semera for a briefing, water check and vehicle inspection, then begin the descent. Lunch around Lake Afdera, then on to the Erta Ale base area to rest through the strongest heat. Later, when conditions allow, walk toward the volcanic area: roughly 10 km over basalt, usually three hours or so, with camels carrying the camp gear. The approach is timed around temperature and access.

Day 2
Erta Ale → Hamed Ela
Another chance to observe the volcanic landscape at dawn if conditions allow, then breakfast and a long overland day across the desert to Hamed Ela. In the late afternoon, if conditions allow, visit the Lake Asale salt plain as the light softens.

Day 3
Dallol → salt country → Semera
An early start to reach Dallol before the heat. Your guide explains the mineral formations, salt structures and hydrothermal features rather than just giving you time to photograph them. Where activity allows, watch traditional salt extraction and camel transport from a respectful distance, then return to Semera.

Questions travellers ask
- How difficult is the Danakil?
- The challenge comes mainly from heat, long 4×4 journeys, rough tracks, remote conditions, early starts and basic camping. It is not a technical mountaineering expedition, but it should not be treated as an ordinary sightseeing tour.
- Is there still a lava lake at Erta Ale?
- Not at present. The lava lake that made Erta Ale famous, present since at least 1906, drained during an eruption in 2017. Today activity is mostly small glowing vents (hornitos), occasional fresh lava and degassing, and it changes from month to month. We tell you what is currently being seen before you book, and never promise a specific volcanic display.
- Are camel caravans guaranteed?
- No. They are part of the traditional salt economy, but whether you see them depends on timing and local activity.
- Is Dallol always accessible?
- Access depends on current conditions, local instructions and safety considerations. We confirm the plan for your dates before departure.
- Is this luxury travel?
- No. Even with careful organisation the Danakil remains remote, and camps are basic. That is part of the experience.
