The mountains that started the story.
Why We Go
This is personal. Our founder, Tesema Teven, was born and raised in the shadow of these mountains. The Simien is not one more product in a catalogue; it is where he learned what it means to know a landscape.
Simien Mountains National Park covers about 412 square kilometres and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1978. It was placed on the list of sites in danger in 1996, when the Walia ibex was declining, and removed in 2017 after its populations recovered.
It is the refuge of the Walia ibex, a mountain goat found only here, the gelada and the rare Ethiopian wolf. Ras Dashen, at about 4,550 metres, is the highest point in Ethiopia.
We do not see trekking as simply walking between camps. You meet local scouts, walk through farming landscapes, stop for coffee, watch geladas and, if conditions allow, climb higher. The challenge here is altitude, cold and terrain rather than heat.
