When to visit Afar and the Danakil Depression
Timing an Afar expedition means planning around heat, daylight and the confirmed route. Start with the cooler season, then build the rest of your Ethiopian journey around it.

If the Danakil is the reason you are coming to Ethiopia, choose your dates around Afar first. A comfortable month in the northern highlands does not automatically make it a comfortable month on the salt plain. The two landscapes need different plans, particularly when they share one itinerary.
Our destination catalogue recommends November to January for Afar and the Danakil. This is a planning window, not a promise of mild weather: the lowlands remain hot, and the daily programme needs room for early starts, shade and rest. Tell the team your preferred dates before fixing the rest of your trip.
Consider what you want from the journey. A short route can concentrate on the main landscapes, while a longer expedition can leave more time at Lake Afdera, Erta Ale and the salt country around Hamed Ela. Photographers may value extra observation windows more than another place on the checklist.
Time of day matters alongside time of year. Your guide plans visits and walks around the conditions encountered on the ground. Dallol, the salt plain and the volcano are different environments, so a single fixed daily timetable would be a poor way to organise the whole expedition.
For a combined trip, discuss the northern section at the same time as the Danakil dates. Arrival arrangements, rest days, road connections and the finish point should work as one journey. Access and operating conditions are checked for your proposed route; a seasonal recommendation alone does not confirm a departure.
