What to pack for an Afar and Danakil expedition

Pack for the journey you have booked, rather than for an imagined resort stay. The core Danakil route involves road travel, exposed landscapes, walks and basic expedition camps. A bag that is easy to organise is more useful than a large suitcase full of things you cannot comfortably carry or find after dark.

For daytime clothing, choose light layers that cover your arms and legs, together with a sun hat. Bring footwear suitable for uneven volcanic ground and salt-country walks. Try your shoes before departure: the evening approach to Erta Ale is not the place to discover that a new pair is uncomfortable.

A headlamp, spare batteries or a charging plan, a reusable water bottle and your usual personal essentials belong near the top of the list. Keep a small day bag for items you need during outings. Ask the team what camp equipment is supplied so that you do not duplicate bulky items unnecessarily.

Protect cameras and other electronics from dust, and bring enough power for the route you have agreed. Reliable charging, mobile coverage and washing facilities should not be assumed at every overnight stop. The pre-departure briefing should explain the camp arrangements for your particular itinerary.

If your expedition continues to Gheralta, Lalibela or the Simien Mountains, add layers for the highlands rather than packing only for desert heat. Share any equipment or mobility concerns before booking. The final packing list should follow the confirmed walks, accommodation and route, not a generic promise that every Danakil trip is identical.
