Lake Assale and Lake Afdera: two sides of Afar’s salt country
The salt plain at Lake Assale and the waters of Lake Afdera reveal different connections between landscape, livelihoods and the Danakil route.

Lake Assale and Lake Afdera can appear together on an itinerary, but they offer different ways to understand Afar. One introduces the salt plain and its working landscape; the other brings open water and salt production into a journey often associated only with desert and volcanoes.
Lake Assale is closely connected to the traditional salt economy. Where work is taking place, a visit can reveal the relationship between the plain, the people cutting salt and the routes carrying it onward. Observe the activity as it happens. Salt workers and camel caravans are never guaranteed sights on a particular departure.
Lake Afdera, also called Afrera, is a saline lake with salt works around its shores. In the current Afar Horizon catalogue it is a stop on many routes from Semera toward the volcanic landscape. Longer itineraries can give it more time, rather than using it only as a brief pause between drives.
The lakes should not be treated as interchangeable stops. Tell the team whether you are interested in the salt economy, landscape photography or a slower pace through Afar. A route with time around the lake is different from one concentrating on Erta Ale and Dallol, even when both include a stop at Afdera.
Ask which visits and overnight arrangements are included in your chosen package. Any activities near the water depend on the confirmed route and local conditions; do not assume that swimming or a hot-spring visit is automatically included. The value of the lakes is in understanding their place in Afar, not collecting an extra activity.
