Day Expedition · Private
A first encounter with the Afar lowlands and Lake Afdera, in one day from Semera.
The Journey
One day cannot honestly deliver the whole Danakil Depression, and we do not pretend that it can. The Afar Edge introduces the descent from the highlands into the Afar lowlands and the salt environment around Lake Afdera.
For travellers with only one day available for Afar. The road itself is part of the experience: as you leave Semera the vegetation thins, volcanic terrain appears and the horizon widens.

Day by Day
Exact timings, camp locations and access are confirmed for your dates.
Day 1
A short briefing on hydration, heat and photography etiquette, then the descent toward the Afar Depression; the drive to Lake Afdera usually takes three to four hours, depending on the road. Your guide explains how altitude, climate, volcanic activity and settlement change as the road drops. Time near Lake Afdera, a hypersaline lake more than 100 metres below sea level, fed by hot springs and ringed by salt evaporation ponds, to talk about the salt economy of Afar. Lunch on the way, then the return to Semera as the afternoon light changes.
Operating subject to current access and conditions
The Danakil is a remote expedition environment. While we follow the planned itinerary as closely as possible, route conditions, weather, access, security and local operational circumstances can occasionally require adjustments. Our experienced local team makes these decisions with safety and the quality of the experience in mind.
