Lake Afdera and a night at Erta Ale, for travellers with very little time.
The Journey
Two days takes you beyond an introduction and into the volcanic landscape around Erta Ale. It is deliberately not sold as "everything in two days": Dallol and the salt flats need a longer trip.
Designed for travellers whose schedule is extremely tight but who want a night in the volcanic desert rather than a day trip.
Places
Day by Day
Exact timings, camp locations and access are confirmed for your dates.
Day 1
Early departure and the transition into Afar, with stops for photographs and interpretation. Lunch near Lake Afdera, then deeper into the depression on increasingly rough roads. Rest through the hottest part of the day near Erta Ale, then walk toward the volcanic area as temperatures drop. The walk depends on the current route and conditions.
Day 2
An early-morning observation window if conditions allow, before the strongest heat. Back to the vehicles for breakfast, then the long return across the changing desert to Semera.
Operating subject to current access and conditions
The Danakil is a remote expedition environment. While we follow the planned itinerary as closely as possible, route conditions, weather, access, security and local operational circumstances can occasionally require adjustments. Our experienced local team makes these decisions with safety and the quality of the experience in mind.
