Human Origins · Afar Region
Afar’s place in the story of human origins.
Why We Go
Hadar is associated with the 1974 discovery of Lucy, a partial Australopithecus afarensis skeleton dated to around 3.2 million years ago. It brings a human-origins perspective to the landscapes of Afar.
The Lower Awash Valley is a place to understand through context and careful interpretation. Its importance is not a promise of finding fossils on a walk or seeing original specimens in the field.
This is a knowledge guide; a field visit requires separate confirmation of access, local arrangements and a suitable itinerary.
Highlights
Tell the team whether your interest is general history, geology or specialist study. A research or heritage site should not be treated as an ordinary sightseeing stop, and no visit is included in the current published packages.
Visitor access must be confirmed
Do not assume unrestricted access or a scheduled tour. A visit is considered only after the necessary local arrangements have been checked.
