Begin in Afar, climb toward Axum and Gondar, trek the Simien and finish beside Lake Tana.
The Journey
A fifteen-day expedition connecting the Danakil with Axum, Gondar, the Simien Mountains and Bahir Dar. Desert camps, highland hotels, mountain walking and a Lake Tana boat journey form distinct chapters, with the final route confirmed around access and transport arrangements.
This is the Afar-led fifteen-day journey. It starts in Semera and includes the Danakil before continuing north, unlike Northern Ethiopia Grand Horizon, which follows the highland historical route without a Danakil section.
Places
Day by Day
Exact timings, camp locations and access are confirmed for your dates.
Day 1
Meet the team, check equipment and review the expedition. The day is adjusted to arrival time, with a briefing on heat, water, camps and the route ahead.
Day 2
Enter Afar’s lowland landscapes, pausing around Lake Afdera where appropriate. Continue to the confirmed expedition camp, preparing for the volcanic stage.
Day 3
Explore the volcanic setting according to current access and local instructions. Observation is timed around heat and conditions, with rest and interpretation between suitable activity windows.
Day 4
Cross the desert toward Hamed Ela. If timing and access permit, visit the salt plain of Lake Asale as the light softens.
Day 5
Visit the mineral landscape of Dallol where accessible, followed by salt-country interpretation. Observe salt working or caravan activity only where it is taking place and local guidance allows.
Day 6
Begin the transition into the northern highlands. The transport connection is confirmed for your dates and may be adjusted to route conditions and available services.
Day 7
A guided historical day focuses on the archaeological landscape and religious heritage, with visits chosen according to access and the group’s interests.
Day 8
Travel toward Gondar using the connection agreed in your itinerary. Flight or overland arrangements are confirmed separately rather than assumed.
Day 9
Explore Gondar’s historical sites with local interpretation. Allow time for the city and the preparations needed before entering the mountains.
Day 10
Travel through Debark for the agreed park arrangements, then enter the Simien landscape. Begin walking at a pace appropriate to the group and altitude.
Day 11
Continue the mountain walking programme toward Geech, with escarpment scenery and time for rest. The exact trail follows weather, access and the guide’s assessment.
Day 12
Walk through the mountain landscape toward Chenek, with viewpoints and wildlife observation where conditions allow. Sightings are never guaranteed.
Day 13
Leave the mountains and continue through Gondar toward Bahir Dar. The change from trekking to a lakeside stay provides a different rhythm for the final days.
Day 14
Take the planned Lake Tana boat journey with selected monastery visits. Any Blue Nile excursion is arranged according to time and conditions and confirmed in the final programme.
Day 15
Breakfast and the agreed departure arrangements. Flights, transfers or further nights follow your confirmed quotation.
Operating subject to current access and conditions
This combined itinerary depends on access in Afar and the northern highlands, mountain conditions and workable transport connections. Camping, walking stages and overnight locations are confirmed for your dates.
The Danakil is a remote expedition environment. While we follow the planned itinerary as closely as possible, route conditions, weather, access, security and local operational circumstances can occasionally require adjustments. Our experienced local team makes these decisions with safety and the quality of the experience in mind.
