The Journey
From the salt desert to the ancient kingdom of Aksum and the sandstone cliffs of Gheralta.
Five days in the Danakil, then the road climbs out of the desert into farmland and the highlands: two nights in Aksum and a final day in Gheralta. It connects the extreme geological landscape with northern Ethiopia’s ancient civilisations.
The contrast is the point: from the lowest, hottest landscapes in Africa to one of its oldest kingdoms in a single journey.

Questions travellers ask
- How difficult is the Danakil?
- The challenge comes mainly from heat, long 4×4 journeys, rough tracks, remote conditions, early starts and basic camping. It is not a technical mountaineering expedition, but it should not be treated as an ordinary sightseeing tour.
- Is there still a lava lake at Erta Ale?
- Not at present. The lava lake that made Erta Ale famous, present since at least 1906, drained during an eruption in 2017. Today activity is mostly small glowing vents (hornitos), occasional fresh lava and degassing, and it changes from month to month. We tell you what is currently being seen before you book, and never promise a specific volcanic display.
- Are domestic flights included?
- They are quoted separately at the current confirmed fare, because flight prices and schedules change. We include them in your proposal so you see the full cost before booking.
- Which church will we visit in Gheralta?
- Your guide chooses with you according to current access, fitness, weather and local guidance. Some churches involve steep, exposed climbs; others are easy to reach.
- Can the route change?
- Yes. Flight schedules, road conditions and regional access can require adjustments. The itinerary is the framework of the journey, and we adapt it when we need to.
