Proposed Expedition · Private
A proposed journey from Axum’s ancient kingdom through the highlands to the salt and volcanic landscapes of Afar.
The Journey
Spend two nights in Axum before travelling through Gheralta and Mekelle toward Afar. A staging stop precedes the Danakil section through Lake Afdera, Erta Ale, Lake Asale and Dallol. The nine-day route ends in Semera and remains conditions-dependent.
Start with human history and finish with geological landscapes. Dedicated time in Axum and a staging night distinguish this route from the existing Semera-to-highlands journey.
Places
Day by Day
Exact timings, camp locations and access are confirmed for your dates.
Day 1
Meet the team and review the confirmed route. An introductory orientation depends on arrival time; prepare for the historical day ahead.
Day 2
Explore the archaeological and historical landscape with a guide. Stelae, tombs and religious heritage visits are chosen according to current access, with time to understand their context.
Day 3
Travel into Gheralta’s sandstone landscape. A viewpoint, short walk or suitable church visit can introduce the area, depending on timing and access.
Day 4
Allow time for a highland experience before continuing to Mekelle. Your guide adjusts walking and church visits to the group’s ability and current conditions.
Day 5
Make the conditions-dependent transition toward Afar. Use the staging stop to rest, review heat and water arrangements and prepare for the remote section. Routing is confirmed for your dates.
Day 6
Begin the lowland expedition toward Lake Afdera. Explore the lake and salt-working landscape where access allows, with interpretation and time to adapt to the environment.
Day 7
Continue into volcanic terrain. Rest through the strongest heat and approach the observation area only as current conditions and local guidance permit.
Day 8
Cross the desert to Hamed Ela and prepare for the salt plain. A late-day Lake Asale visit depends on timing and access, with salt activity and caravans never guaranteed.
Day 9
Explore the mineral and salt landscape at Dallol where accessible, then return toward Semera. The end of the expedition and onward arrangements are agreed in the confirmed plan.
Operating subject to current access and conditions
Future / conditions-dependent expedition. Access in Tigray and the connection into Afar require operational checks before confirmation. This itinerary does not guarantee a departure, flight or road connection.
The Danakil is a remote expedition environment. While we follow the planned itinerary as closely as possible, route conditions, weather, access, security and local operational circumstances can occasionally require adjustments. Our experienced local team makes these decisions with safety and the quality of the experience in mind.
